While I definately did not support his candidacy, I do accept that Senator Obama will, in about 2 months, be my president. One of the things that is a part of the military culture, and, indeed, prescribed in our Constitution, is civilian supremacy–the president, a civilian, is the Commander in Chief of our military. No one in uniform will ever be the ultimate boss–it will always be a civilian; this is, perhaps, the prime reason why our military has always been apolitical and has never tried to take over the country. It is one of our nation’s great strengths.br /br /Perhaps the greatest test of this subordination of the military to the president was during the presidency of Bill Clinton. No president ever hated the military more–or was hated back more. Yet, for example, when he sent us off to bomb Lybia–to detract the news headlines from one of his affairs–off we went–as we did in the Blackhawk Down situation. A number of troops resigned rather than serve under him, but those who stayed, served honorably and well.br /br /So, I will give President-elect Obama my support and loyalty–as long as his actions merit it. I’m no longer on active duty, so am not bound to be loyal. But I will give him the benefit of the doubt. You may notice that no liberals gave George Bush any slack from the day he was elected. It seems that conservatives and independents are the only ones who ever give a new person any slack as he settles in. But, then, we military and veterans are mostly conservatives and independents, so I expect that we will all pray for Mr. Obama and await, with hope, his actions.
The President-elect
November 22nd, 2008We have a new Commander in Chief-elect
November 8th, 2008I was very disappointed with the results of the presidential election last Tuesday. But in America, political opponents are just that–oponents; they’re not enemies. We’re all Americans, and we have a great variety of opinons and values–but our greatest value is rule by the majority–and the majority has spoken. In many other countries, the supporters of the unsuccessful candidates take to the streets, burning and rioting–we don’t do that here.br /br /As Americans we get behind our new president and seek to make him successful–because his success is our country’s–therefore, our–success. There are no perfect people, therefore, no perfect presidents–and the Republic has shown itself to be quite resilient. Do pray for president-elect Obama.
My yard signs disappeared
November 2nd, 2008This past Friday night my Vets for McCain and McCain for Pres yard signs disappeared. No other signs disappeared. My assumption is that I was “visited” by followers of the most prominet disciple of Rev. Wright. Rev. Wright, you may remember is an outspoken racist and hates America–and he was the Obamas’ pastor for 20 years–and they never knew that he was a racist or hated America. I’ve been a member of a number of churches in my life and they’re all like big families–the pastor could never say anything different or contraversial without the word being all over the church family–including to those who weren’t present at the time.br /br /I certainly don’t believe that Mr. Obama approves that some of his followers stole my yard signs. Neither do I believe that the Obamas sat under an America-hating, racist pastor for 20 years and didn’t know of his feelings and agree with him.
