Obama meets with McChrystal

Last Friday President Obama met with General Stanley McChrystal, the commander of US and NATO forces in Afghanistan. They met aboard Air Force One in Copenhagen where Obama was unsuccessful in winning the Olympics for Chicago.br /McChrystal warned earlier in London that the Afghan conflict is deteriorating and will “not remain winnable indefinitely.” The situation “is serious and I choose that word very, very carefully… neither success nor failure can be taken for granted,” he said; the general, has reportedly asked for 40,000 more troops, and soon. “The situation is in some ways deteriorating but not in all ways,” said the general.br /Obama will decide on more troops only after it first arrives at a new US strategy. The process could take weeks, officials say, warning that past conflicts like the Vietnam war have shown the folly of throwing thousands of men into a fight that is not properly defined. If anyone is curious, a war is defined as killing the enemy before he can kill you; it’s not about putting troops at risk and then taking time to think about why they are there.
