On 12 May 1962, Douglas MacArthur delivered his famous “Duty, Honor, Country” valedictory speech at West Point. I was there as a cadet; he spoke at the conclusion of the noon meal in the mess hall. He called on each of us to truly align ourselves with the Acadmey’s motto of Duty, Honor, Country. I know that that motto has been a guiding principle in my life. As I teach college students today I see clearly that the concept of duty (at least duty to country) has no meaning to most of them. Their major focus is on their rights. In all probability they believe in the values that they did (or didn’t) learn at home. We need a new focus on values for our nation.
