On 10 Sept 1776, General George Washington asked for a volunteer for an extremely dangerous mission: to gather intelligence behind enemy lines before the coming Battle of Harlem Heights. Captain Nathan Hale, 21 years old, of the 19th Regiment of the Continental Army stepped forward and subsequently become one of the first known American spies of the Revolutionary War. He was caught by the British and, as was the custom of the day, hung. His last words were, “I regret that I have but one life to give for my country.” Too many Americans today aren’t even willing to be inconvenienced for their country by paying attention to the condition of our nation and not only voting, but voting intelligently. We owe at least that much to Captain Hale.
