On 8 Oct 1918, during WWI, Corporal Alvin C. York killed over 20 German soldiers and captured an additional 132 at the head of a small patrol in the Argonne Forest near the Meuse River in France. He was later promoted to sergeant and awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor.
York was a very religious man who got drafted for WWI. While in training he was about to declare contentious objector status based on his understand of the Bible. A Christian officer helped him see that military service was not asking him to sin. York became one of the great heroes of all time.
Truly, a GREAT American.
