President Obama recently presented the Medal of Honor to Army Sergeant First Class Jared Monti for valorous conduct above the call of duty. It was a posthumous award. Monti is the sixth recipient of the medal since 9-11 and the second to receive it for actions in Afghanistan. The other four recipients were killed in action in Iraq.br /The last time the Medal was presented to a living recipient was 27 Feb 07 when it was awarded to former Army Major Bruce Crandell for heroism in 1965 during the Vietnam War. I wonder why there have been no living recipients in this war. I know from experience that not everyone who acts heroically dies in the process. Perhaps there’s a greater focus on honoring those who have given their lives. I understand that Congressman Duncan Hunter, an Iraq/Afghanistan veteran himself, is looking into this.
