Conn Atty Gen and US Senate hopeful Richard Blumenthal has many times said that he was a Vietnam vet; many of these statements are still available on tape.
Oops, the truth came out. After getting 5 military deferments he found a spot in the Marine Reserves in Washington DC (working mostly with toys for tots). Never was out of the US. If he’d lie repeatedly about this, would he lie about other things? Well, he has claimed to have been the captain of the Harvard swim team–he was never on the team.
His response: he misspoke. My response: He’s a liar.
