The General McCrystal event is very interesting. McCrystal is the only know senior general to vote for Obama; he was hand picked by Obama to run the war in Afghanistan. The plan being used there is the one McCrystal wrote. McCrystal is the only senior American trusted by the President of Afghanistan. The Rolling Stone article really doesn’t report on McChrystal saying anything negative about Obama—most of the stuff is attributed to unnamed aides. But, McCyrstal has to go—and he’s gone.
In the words of one of my West Point classmates, “Afghanistan seems to be taking on the trappings of RVN (Vietnam): field commanders waiting, many times in vain, for clueless politicians to determine strategy, and to some extent, tactics; an inept local government not adding much of anything to the equation; a local army that is, at best, marginally effective; and the onset of a “nobody else gives a shit, why should I?” attitude with US troops.”
One thing is for sure. If the boss (president) doesn’t want to win, the troops can’t.
