Right here in my home town a civil rights complaint has been filed against a woman who posted an ad at her church seeking a Christian roommate. The Fair Housing Center of West Michigan said that this was an illegal preference because it excluded people of other faiths. The case has been turned over to the Mich Dept of Civil Rights; she could face a several hundred dollar fine and “fair housing training so it doesn’t happen again.

If she’d published a “legal” ad and a non-Christian person had applied, she could legally have refused the person, as long as “faith” wasn’t mentioned as the reason. So truth in advertising is the real problem here.
